Cell Phone Mini Towers In Piper Glen

From WJZY April 2016:

CHARLOTTE, NC — Plans to install cell phone towers in Piper Glen aren’t sitting well with the people that live there.

Homeowners are worried about the impact the towers will have on their community and wildlife.

“The fact that they are so close to an active eagle nest is very concerning for me. This neighborhood takes into account the environment and the wildlife that’s here. It’s not just us that lives here,” said resident Ali Martinez.

Utility company Crown Castle plans to install four cell towers that will stand 28 feet high. The towers could end up in the front yards of residents. Neighbors want the towers placed in common areas that won’t be as visible.

City councilmember Ed Driggs says federal law gives utilities the right to place towers inside of public rights of way. A company has to apply for a permit with the city, proving the towers are necessary and will benefit the area. That’s what city administrators are considering now.

“How do we comply with federal law and also respond to the concerns of the residents,” asked Driggs.

Crown Castle says they’re willing to consider changes to where the towers will go. They also released this statement:

“Crown Castle uses great care when considering where to place facilities in the public right of way and many factors are involved in the design, engineering and construction of our networks.  We comply with all FCC environmental regulations and guidelines when installing and maintaining our equipment, and we do not foresee any impact on bald eagles or other wildlife in the area.”

– Ann Brooks, Government Relations Manager, Crown Castle

There’s a meeting on Thursday to discuss these issues. The meeting is at 6:30pm and will be in the Piper Glen Clubhouse.
